What Participants Will Learn

Our medical interpreter education programs are designed to prepare bilingual individuals with the practical skills, professional knowledge, and ethical foundation needed to work effectively in health care and community settings.

Instruction is delivered through a combination of guided lectures, interactive practice activities, real-world scenarios, small-group discussion, and applied role-plays. Participants who successfully complete the program and meet assessment requirements will receive a certificate of completion verifying their training hours.

Training materials may include:

  • A comprehensive course workbook
  • Bilingual medical terminology resources
  • Supplemental reference guides aligned with course length and focus areas

Certificates of completion do not expire and are commonly accepted by employers, agencies, and state programs as documentation of formal medical interpreter education.

Core Topics Covered

Participants gain instruction in the following areas:

  • Foundations of medical interpreting practice
  • Professional roles and boundaries of interpreters
  • Ethical standards and confidentiality in health care settings
  • Medical terminology, anatomy, and basic physiology
  • Overview of the U.S. health care system
  • Cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication
  • Advocacy and communication strategies
  •  Professional development and career pathways

Advanced Training (64-Hour Program)

Our extended 64-hour program includes additional instruction in:

  • Mental health interpreting
  • Health equity and disparities
  • Interpreting considerations for LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Expanded medical terminology and complex care scenarios

In Oregon, a minimum of 60 hours of formal health care interpreter training is required to pursue qualification or certification. Our 64-hour program meets this educational requirement and aligns with Oregon Health Authority prerequisites for health care interpreter pathways.
